And Julia Roberts is excellent. The second Homecoming season — entirely Julia Roberts-free and reducing Stephan James to a prominent supporting role — might have been an opportunity to expand the world of the story (adapted from a podcast), to delve more substantially into character and conspiracy. Her disorientation is amplified by eerie Hitchcockian staging and music.

Amazon is releasing Homecoming Season Two on May 22nd.Esmail and Roberts are back for Season 2, but only as co-producers.Julia Roberts best performance possibly ever.

Yes, I realise that this is the second time this phrase has been used in the space of three paragraphs, but that’s because Homecoming courts it so mercilessly. The result is a television series that's frequently breathtaking. In terms of character complexity, Audrey is the central figure this season, ultimately the only person I wanted to know more about.

the mind.At times this is to Homecoming’s detriment – at times it seems more like an exercise than a story – but elsewhere, when Esmail copies Hitchcock’s spirit rather than his camera angles, it works like a dream.(She is at her best playing against Hong Chau, a performer who’s a happy carryover from season 1 and whose natural, unaffected charm makes up for the fact that the enigma of her character, a chief selling-point last time around, has been whittled away.) Matching a somewhat emptied-out narrative — one that adds busyness, in the form of big performances by Chris Cooper and Joan Cusack, among others — the direction, by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, feels more cautious, less striking.

Not only does it feature a higher calibre of star, but it’s also directed by Mr Robot’s Sam Esmail, a singular talent capable of infusing even the most mundane scene with a sense of low-level dread.

Homecoming: Season 1 - Rotten Tomatoes - Reviews

There is an excellent aesthetic here and wonderful performances, but one can't help but feel like the series becomes predictable.Esmail’s framing still claws every last ounce of potential from each setup, but now it doesn’t look as if someone banged into the camera just before it started rolling. It’s old-fashioned.

Their chemistry, though, isn’t as strong as it was between Roberts and James, nor is there nearly as much to the story and how it’s told. However, this is much loftier than that. It’s all watchable but inessential.

Everything is propelled by when the writers want to set aside their dissimulation.Disoriented characters and clandestine corporate malfeasance were also the building blocks of Season 1, but the talent of star Julia Roberts and the strong direction of “Mr.

The writing is spare, the directing bland, but at least there's pleasure in watching the actors. That, in turn, relates back to Audrey Temple's (Hong Chau) seemingly abrupt elevation from Geist assistant to some position of authority in the first season finale.I guess.

But such shortfalls may not be a problem for all viewers.Robot’s” Sam Esmail made the complex and paranoid narrative pop — at least in dramatic terms.Julia Roberts best performance possibly ever.

In the present, Julia Roberts is a happy, driven administrator with a job that involves rehabilitating veterans back into civilian life.In terms of character complexity, Audrey is the central figure this season, ultimately the only person I wanted to know more about.Perhaps it’s part of a larger ploy, but there’s not enough subtlety in the writing or performances to make her meekness feel like an intriguing layer of subterfuge.

Homecoming Amazon Review - Vulture

Confusion is central to the twisting plot of “Homecoming” when the psychological thriller returnsto Amazon Prime on Friday, but at least two things are clear through all the gaslighting: Season 1 is much better in hindsight, and Season 2has problems standing on its own.Pakula, among others, which makes certain segments of the new season a tribute act to a tribute act; and there’s less of it, so the visual signatures feel more obligatory than playful this time out.The stranger's name and the melon and how Audrey came to supplant Bobby Cannavale's Colin Belfast are all clear riddles with simple payoffs, all without ambiguity or implication, each roughly equal in narrative value.

No, what matters most here is the ending. This is a very satisfyingly structured series indeed.

Movie superstar Julia Roberts crushes here, benching her legendary smile - mostly - to play a frazzled, damaged administrator discovering the dark side of a corporate-run program for veterans.Specifically, it’s as old as Alfred Hitchcock.Perhaps it’s part of a larger ploy, but there’s not enough subtlety in the writing or performances to make her meekness feel like an intriguing layer of subterfuge.

Fans of last season might welcome an addendum to the mind-bending mystery they consumed in 2018, even if it’s just to remind them why the show was so good in the first place. Not only does it feature a higher calibre of star, but it’s also directed by Mr Robot’s Sam Esmail, a singular talent capable of infusing even the most mundane scene with a sense of low-level dread. Please reference “Error Code 2121” when contacting customer service.Homecoming - Reviews - Rotten Tomatoes.
